The British Journal of Anaesthesia and other BJA titles are owned by a charitable company, which is also called “British Journal of Anaesthesia”.

British Journal of Anaesthesia (the company) is a company limited by guarantee and having no share capital incorporated in England and Wales with company number 06410445.

It is Registered as a charity in England & Wales (number 1121817) and Scotland (number SC039825).

The Registered Office is: Department of Anaesthesia, University of Liverpool, Duncan Building, Daulby Street, Liverpool L69 3GA.

The Directors of the company and Trustees of the charity are:

The constitutional documents of the company define its charitable purpose, or objects, as follows:

OBJECTS
1    Primarily:
1.1    to advance and improve theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in all branches of anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine, and related topics and
1.2    to promote the health, safety and welfare of all persons by improving and disseminating knowledge and skills of anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine and thereby reducing the suffering and dangers of anaesthesia and surgery,
by procuring the publication and dissemination in any suitable media of a journal (“the Journal”) in the above fields of the best available quality from any legitimate source.  The Journal shall be called “British Journal of Anaesthesia”, and shall consist principally of peer-reviewed reports of clinical and laboratory investigations, reviews of other papers, exposition of scientific theory, case studies, and editorials.  All reports and other items shall be selected for publication in the Journal on the basis of their fulfilment of the objects set out in sub-clauses 1.1 and 1.2 above, irrespective of any other consideration or interest therein, whether of the Charity or any other person.
In the pursuit of this object it shall be permissible :-
(i)    to charge recipients of the Journal or any part thereof such costs  as are reasonable in view of the value or cost of the content and the resources of the reader; and
(ii)    to charge the authors or other providers of the material for the publication such charges as are reasonable or common for such publication.
2    Secondly, and conditional upon the primary object above being substantially achieved:
2.1    to encourage and facilitate research in all branches of anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine and related fields by making grants available to suitable persons to assist them with academic fees and materials, salaries, facilities, equipment, accommodation and subsistence, and such other costs as the Charity shall determine;
2.2    to advance, improve and maintain the education of students, researchers and medical practitioners in all branches of anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine and related fields, by means of the publication of a journal and the publication and dissemination in any suitable media of specialised educational materials;
2.3    to promote and assist continuing education in all branches of anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine and related fields by publications, lectures, demonstrations, pamphlets and any other suitable media;
2.4    to promote the objects set out above by giving donations and subscribing to other charitable bodies and societies where such gifts and subscriptions shall be used for promoting objects closely similar to those above;
and by doing all such other acts and things as shall be necessary or desirable for the promotion of the objects above.
3    In pursuing its Objects, the Charity shall make no distinction or judgement based upon gender, race, religion or sexual orientation.
